What is Research? Research Methods vs Research Methodology, Research Methods vs Research Techniques

What is Research?

The Oxford Concise dictionary defines research as:

i. the systematic investigation into and study of materials, sources, etc, in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions.
ii. an endeavor to discover new or collate old facts etc. by the scientific study of a subject or by a course of critical investigation.

Redman and Mory define research as a “systematized effort to gain new knowledge.”
Research is defined as the creation of new knowledge and/or the use of existing knowledge in a new and creative way so as to generate new concepts, methodologies and understandings. This could include synthesis and analysis of previous research to the extent that it leads to new and creative outcomes.

Research Methods vs Research Methodology

Research methods refer to the methods and techniques the researchers use in performing
research operations. Research methodology is a way to systematically solve the research problem.
To understand the difference between research methods vs research methodology, we must acknowledge that the scope of research methodology is wider than that of research methods. Thus, when we talk of research methodology we not only talk of the research methods but also consider the logic behind the methods we use in the context of our research study and explain why we are using a particular method or technique and why we are not using others so that research results are capable of being evaluated either by the researcher himself or by others.

The differences between research method and research methodology can be drawn clearly on the following grounds:

a) The research method is the procedure or technique applied by the researcher to conduct the research. On the other hand, research methodology is a system of methods to conduct the research scientifically.
b) The research method is concerned with carrying out experiment, test, surveys, interviews, etc. Conversely, research methodology is concerned with learning various techniques which can be employed in the performance of experiment, test or survey.
c) Research method covers various investigation techniques. Unlike, research methodology is concerned alignment of these techniques with the research objectives.

Research Methods vs Research Techniques

Research methods refer to the behavior and instruments used in selecting and constructing
research technique.
Research techniques refer to the behavior and instruments we use in performing research
operations such as making observations, recording data, techniques of processing data and the like.
For instance, the difference between methods and techniques of data collection can better be understood from the details given in the following chart—
